Workshop for Adults: Collecting the Uncollectible

What incites us to collect things? Why do some objects become part of a collection, while others are left aside? And what do those objects "left aside" say, both about the collection itself, and the people behind it? What do objects in the museum say about its identity? Participants in this class will explore questions such as these in the context of the museum's upcoming celebration of its first decade after reopening, called “Passion for Collecting.” Acting as modern archeologists, we will use photographs, postcards, and other materials to uncover the choices made and the stories told by the objects that are shown - and not shown - in the museum's galleries. During the second session, we will explore our own stories, using photographs of personal artifacts to create virtual collections of our “left aside” objects, which speak to who we are in this location and at this moment in time.

Students will need to bring their own digital cameras to class.
