This selection of American prints drawn from the Marmor Collection at the Cantor Arts Center highlights works from the early 1970s that capitalize on the simple but bold graphic impact of black against white. Artists on view include Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly, Sam Francis, Robert Rauschenberg, and Bruce Nauman.

LJ Roberts: Carry You With Me

This exhibition is the result of a long-term, ongoing project by LJ Roberts, consisting of 26 six-by-four-inch embroidered portraits of the artist’s friends, collaborators, and lovers within New York’s queer and trans communities. Stitched entirely by hand, these embroideries illustrate how politics, culture, and identity manifest in both visible and subtle ways in daily life.

A Cool Million: Petra Cortright

As part of A Cool Million, the Cantor has collaborated with artist Petra Cortright to create a banner for the museum’s exterior, which features a new digital painting of an invented landscape evoking the rugged scenery and wildfires of California. A Cool Million is a public arts initiative for climate awareness led by artists and institutions to expand environmental justice programming and support the conservation of one million acres of land central to the California hydrological system.

Reality Makes Them Dream: American Photography, 1929–1941

This exhibition features the 1930s work of five artists in the Capital Group Foundation Photography Collection: Ansel Adams, John Gutmann, Helen Levitt, Wright Morris, and Edward Weston. Displayed among a diverse selection of photographs by their contemporaries, this material illuminates how American artists used photography to spark the imagination.

A Change of Scenery: Photographs of Leisure in the Landscape

March 1, 2023–July 16, 2023

 

A Change of Scenery: Photographs of Leisure in the Landscape surveys ways of “being” in the landscape, encompassing common activities like sight-seeing, recreation, and play, and affective states like joy, intimacy, affinity, and belonging. Through approximately 50 photographs of people in various outdoor public spaces, the exhibition considers the importance of access to nature and leisure, what access entails, and how it shapes identity.
