Student Engagement Assistants

Join the team at the Cantor Arts Center on the Stanford campus. Learn how art museums create and produce engaging programming for visitor audiences of all ages. As a member of the Student Engagement Assistant (SEA) team you will have the opportunity to make an impact on student-facing and public museum events throughout the year and help us shape student and public programs for the future.

Student Engagement Assistants (SEAs) at the Cantor Arts Center will work as a team in collaboration with the Department of Academic and Public Programs to produce lively, fun, and dynamic engagement opportunities for Stanford students and for the larger community of attendees at the museum. The main focus will be on presenting our most popular programming events: Party on the Edge, Art for All Family Days, and Museum Nights.

Party on the Edge: October 5, 2023
Party on the Edge welcomes students returning to campus to the Stanford art museums with the biggest student party of the year. All the features of Museum Nights (see below) are showcased here in a larger collaboration with Stanford Arts. Working this event is helpful for SEAs as they begin the planning process for upcoming Museum Nights.

Art for All Family Days: October 15, 2023 and April 14, 2024
Two times a year the Stanford museums invite families for a festival-like day of free art making activities, guided family friendly tours, and live music performances on the Cantor’s North Lawn. SEAs will act as museum educators to facilitate art making activities and help children and their adults build exciting connections with art on view in the museums. During the Winter 2024 quarter SEAs will have the opportunity to create Art for All art making activities of their own design for the upcoming Spring Family Day.

Museum Nights: February 22, 2024 and May 16, 2024
The museum will be open late one night during each of the Winter and Spring quarters for a special student event. The event will feature a variety of activities and programs for students, such as live performances, art making activities, gallery tours, and more. SEAs will assist in planning, coordinating, publicizing, and staffing our quarterly Museum Nights.

Student Advisory Council
SEAs will learn more about how museums operate, research student engagement opportunities at other university art museums, evaluate current museum visitor experience, propose activities, themes, and program types for future years, and may also facilitate engagement with visitors inside the museum galleries on high-attendance days, coordinate free art making opportunities, and explore opportunities for community-building across campus.

Applicants must have good communication skills and a strong interest in museum programming and/or museum education. Must be reliable, responsive to email, have good organizational skills, and able to manage time and resources effectively. Familiarity with museums is helpful, but not required. Must be able to work the dates mentioned above as well as attend additional, regular in-person and/or Zoom meetings, usually on Friday afternoons. You will be expected to work approximately twenty (20) hours each quarter. Pay is based on a minimum of $17.50/hour and in accordance with the Undergraduate Student Wage Scale. Continuing employment as an SEA over the summer of 2023 may be a possibility.
